Renault Ondelios Concept 2008

The 2008 Paris Motor Show sees the wraps come off Renault's top-of-the-range concept car Renault Ondelios designed for lovers of long-haul travel who set store by comfort and refinement. Renault Ondelios epitomizes Renault's vision of the high-end crossover, combining a comfortable ride with respect for the environment. Clear illustrations of that vision are the vehicle's ethereal design, its interior layout, and an original hybrid powertrain.
A sleek design that answers the call of the open road
The 4.8-metre-long, 1.6-metre high Renault Ondelios Concept has drawn inspiration from the world of aviation design to deliver high drag efficiency and a Cd of just 0.29. This long-distance voyager boasts sleek, smooth, amazingly fluid lines that make it appear as though it glides over the ground. It embodies Renault's vision of high-end car.
"Renault Ondelios is inspired by motion rather than speed and is a whole new response to the call of the open road," enthuses Patrick Le Quément, Renault's Design Director.
The aluminium-finish grille is flanked by headlamp units that also suggest flowing motion, while its high-performance LED headlights are both longer lasting and more efficient. Another feature of Renault Ondelios' aerodynamic styling is the boomerang-shaped tail lights. They are built into the bodywork and ringed with air extractors to control the flow of air from the wheel arches.
The glazed roof further emphasises the vehicle's airy look and feel, bathing the interior in natural light. The steeply raked windscreen, which extends well down the bonnet, further accentuates this ethereal feel.
"We think of it as made from a single material, where the body and glazed areas merge into one. Renault Ondelios Concept is a glimpse of what the automobile might be in the medium term future," adds Patrick Le Quément.
The butterfly-type side doors, which also feature an extensive glazed area, add a further touch of elegance to the car's overall styling. They swing out and upwards as the sills slide down to facilitate ingress.
The dark blue anthracite of the bodywork blends perfectly with the tinted glazed area, making the car look as if it were all of a piece and a single colour. The tailgate's upper section rounds off the sleek, aerodynamic lines with a profiled glareshield that slides inwards to air and cool the cabin.
Renault Ondelios sits on seven-spoke, 23-inch aluminium alloy wheels which contribute to its profiled styling. The propeller-like hubs draw airflow from the sides of the car to prevent turbulence. They operate in conjunction with the rim-side brake discs to ensure they suck in air effectively.
The sleek sidewalls of the large diameter 255/40 Michelin Pilot Sport tyres deliver outstanding drag performance. Their tread pattern is designed to minimise deformation of the contact patch while on the move to help curb rolling resistance.
The tread has efficient, active flow channels which, together with the wide circumferential groove that helps clear water, strengthen the image of a high-end, high-tech tyre.
Business-class comfort for a long-haul journey
The elegance of the Renault Ondelios interior is in harmony with the call of the open road suggested by its exterior. To begin with, its layout is designed to profit from all the available space. There are three rows of seats that offer individual seating for six. With their cantilever mounts they give the impression of floating, while their kinematics are redolent of airplane seats. The electrically adjustable backs fold into comfortable, business-class positions, while occupants can deploy and retract their footrests at will. Although their slim lines speak of lightness, they are designed, like giant leaves, to hug their occupants who can curl up in them to enjoy the comfort and support they afford. The height of the seats is carefully designed to ensure occupants are perfectly at ease when they talk to each other.
Unlike conventional door opening systems, the doors are hinged to the roof, which makes getting into the car extremely easy. The second row of seats slide forward and folds down to facilitate access to the third row.
In addition to seating comfort, the cabin exudes a highly refined ambience. The materials used are drawn from contemporary interior design and give the impression of sitting in a lounge on wheels. They blend soft, supple textures like light grey leather and fabric, as seen on the dashboard, seats and door panels. The colour of the seatbacks blends gradually from ochre to purple, further enhancing the sense of security and comfort.
Interior features and fittings are both modern and intuitive. The ergonomically designed controls, in keeping with Renault's touch design approach, afford users efficient, comfortable ease of use.
The ample, flowing yet sober design of the broad dashboard echoes the car's aerodynamic exterior. It is further highlighted by a roomy, suspended stowage compartment which is protected by a lit shell, while all the dashboard's functional components are particularly userfriendly:
* active display skins show driver aid and ride information;
* a monitor at the base of the windscreen displays the different menus and pictures from the door mirror cameras;
* three large strip displays provide driving-related information, revs and how the hybridized drivetrain is operating;
* a digital speedometer.
The technologies with which Renault Ondelios Concept is equipped enhance the collective and individual wellbeing of all occupants. All the passengers, including those in the back row, have their own Samsung interactive portable multimedia devices which they can use for sharing data or multiplayer gaming. Speakers are also incorporated into the headrests and a multizone HVAC system enables each passenger to set the temperature to his or her own liking.
The smart technologies that have gone into designing Ondelios help drivers to settle in at the wheel, include a Samsung cell phone which also acts as a hands-free door lock recognises the driver and loads all his or her personal settings, e.g. seat-adjustment settings and favourite music. The vehicle adds a final, friendly touch in the form of the back-lit logo which lights up to show that it has recognised the driver.
An environmentally friendly voyager
To complement the extensive work that has gone into Renault Ondelios's aerodynamics, some of the car's structural parts are made from natural flax fibre for greater recyclability. In keeping with the commitment to make the car as light as possible, its body is made from carbon and the glazed areas from polycarbonate.
Renault Ondelios Concept is powered by a hybrid powerplant which combines a more powerful 205hp (150kW) version of the 2.0 dCi engine, with two 20kW electric motors at the front and rear. They operate in mild hybrid mode, giving the engine extra boost as required. They use a brake and boost system, recovering energy during braking then delivering it to the engine to boost acceleration. The front motor also uses fuel-saving stop-start technology.
The electric motor mounted on the rear axle drives the rear wheels when the ESP sensors detect a loss of traction, thus giving Renault Ondelios the capability of a 4WD vehicle. The car is equipped with a lithium-ion battery that can deliver power of up to 4kW/h.
With torque of 450Nm between 1,700 and 3800rpm, the diesel engine provides comfort and flexibility at all engine speeds for long-distance driving pleasure. The 2.0 dCi unit takes Renault Ondelios from a standing start to 100kph in just 7.8 seconds. Driving through a seven-speed, double-clutch gearbox, it affords outstanding driving pleasure, while keeping fuel consumption at a frugal 4.5 litres/100km and CO2 emissions at a lowly 120g/km - very impressive for a topof- the-range vehicle.
Similarly, the body, chassis design and hybrid powertrain contribute decisively to protecting the environment.
Renault Ondelios is a long-distance travel-loving aerodynamic crossover born for the open road. It is proof that caring for occupants and the environment is entirely compatible. Renault Ondelios is a concept car that illustrates Renault's vision of the high-end car of the near future.

Renault Megane 2009

New Renault Megane's lines are the product of a desire to produce an immediately eyecatching car. Its dynamic, elegant styling takes its inspiration from the passion associated with the automobile, including cues from the world of sport. New Renault Megane is robust, too, with the accent very much on the fit and finish of its panels, as well as on that of the materials it employs. The new model has also benefited from the progress that has been achieved across the Renault range on both the reliability and durability fronts.
New Renault Megane's interior is extensively equipped with practical, comfort-enhancing features. These include combined analogue/digital instruments incorporating a new, easier to read colour-coded cruise control/speed limiter interface. The list continues with a host of equipment normally associated with the next segment up, such as hands-free entry and ignition, automatic locking as the driver walks away from the car, a Carminat Bluetooth® DVD navigation system and a custom-developed audio system (3D Sound by Arkamys®).
New Renault Megane's on-road performance lives up every bit to the high standard promised by its looks, with precision, control and efficiency combining to deliver a particularly enjoyable and reassuring ride. A broad, extensively renewed range of dCi and TCe powerplants combining performance and respect for the environment is available, with four diesel engines that can claim CO2 emissions equal to, or less than, 120g/km.
New Renault Megane has been designed to offer best-in-class safety performance, too. Features include double side impact sensors and dual-chamber airbags as seen on Renault Laguna III and aimed at minimizing the consequences of a side-on collision. It is also a socially responsible vehicle which is 95 per cent end-of-life recoverable by weight, while almost 12 per cent of the plastics it contains are sourced from recycling, equivalent to an average of 22kg per car.
New Renault Megane marks the beginning of Renault's renewal of its C-segment line-up. With market share of more than a third, this segment has long been the biggest in Western Europe and makes a significant contribution to Renault's performance in terms of both volume and profitability.
By 2010, the new Megane family will include six different models, each of which will have its own distinct and assertive personality. These six models have been conceived essentially for customers in European markets and will be manufactured in Palencia (Spain) and Douai (France). Other models will be available in non-European markets equipped with specific technical solutions suited to local conditions of use.
For almost two years, Renault's design and engineering teams focused their attention on three main areas of development, namely reinforcing the personality of each member of the Renault Megane line-up, ensuring a balanced offer in terms of performance and equipment, and targeting best-in-class positioning for all of its key features.
New Renault Megane, which goes on sale from November 2008, comes after the 15th car of the Renault Commitment 2009 plan and consequently benefits fully from the progress achieved in terms of quality on preceding models.
Designed to seduce
Renault's Design Department worked closely with the project engineers from a very early stage to incorporate styling cues suggestive of the world of sport into new Megane's genetic makeup. The result is a family hatchback of 4.30m in length with a dynamic stance, thanks particularly to its short front and rear overhang, a 2.64m wheelbase, steeply-raked roofline and wide tracks.
Its strong personality is instantly apparent through its racy front-end looks which feature crown lines that sweep across the bonnet from the windscreen pillars to converge on the centrallypositioned logo. Meanwhile, the streamlined forms of the headlamps serve to prolong the fluid lines of the air-intakes to reinforce new Renault Megane's determined expression and piercing gaze.
New Renault Megane's strong personality is also apparent at the rear where the two-part light clusters continue the feature line and facilitate access to the boot. The Latin influence of new Renault Megane's elegantly sensual curves is especially visible when seen from the side. The proportions of its flanks are both harmonious and dynamic, and irresistibly suggest forward movement, as well as an assertive character and the promise of genuine driving enjoyment.
Robustness and perceived quality
At first sight, new Renault Megane exudes a sense of robustness and perceived quality. This impression is heightened by the generous surface area and curvaceous forms of the body panels. Seen from the side, the feature line extends the crease of the slightly prominent front wings rearward to emphasize the car's broad, solid shoulders. The wide track dimensions (1.55m) ensure that the car sits squarely on the road, and this sense of stability is underlined by the steeply-raked rear screen and, indeed, by the entire rearend design. New Renault Megane's proportions, the form of the beltline and the large door panels exude a feeling of protection.
This blend of fluid lines coupled with the generous proportions of the bodywork also maximizes the visual effect produced by the light reflecting off the body, while the range of metallic paint finishes includes the all-new Ecume Blue.
Particular attention has been paid to reducing the cut lines between the different body panels (e.g. windscreen pillars, fuel filler flap) and the front and rear bumpers discreetly incorporate the parking proximity sensors. New Renault Megane's roofline also benefits from specific treatment thanks to the use of laser brazing which eliminates the need for roof trimming.
The interior, meanwhile, features an intuitive driving environment that makes extensive use of fluid forms. The impression that the dashboard is suspended is reinforced by the taut horizontal lines that highlight the curve of the decorative trim. All the controls have been carefully positioned and fall easily to hand both close to the steering wheel and on the centre console, with a view to freeing up as much space as possible for an even roomier cabin. Great care has also gone into the quality and fit and finish of the materials used. The fully integrated dashboard cowl benefits from a finish which is not only soft to the touch, but also resistant to daily use and the ageing effects of sunlight.
The windscreen wipers are aesthetically concealed beneath the bonnet line, a choice which also favours acoustic and aerodynamic performance.
The interior trim has been carefully thought through to produce a range of distinct ambiences depending on equipment level. Customers can accordingly choose between a light, elegant trim that exudes travelling comfort or a darker ambience with a sportier feel. Last but not least, new Renault Megane comes with a comprehensive range of accessories including body kits, comfort-enhancing equipment and stowage solutions.
The focus on an intuitive, comfortable interior
Simplified ergonomics and interfaces mean that new Renault Megane customers will have absolutely no trouble familiarizing themselves with their new vehicle. The first thing they will appreciate as they take the wheel for the first time is new Megane's innovative dashboard which features an analogue rev-counter alongside a digital speedometer which is clear and easy to take in, ensuring greater visual control over the vehicle's speed. The centrally-positioned speedometer also incorporates the cruise control/speed limiter display, fuel and water temperature gauges, and 'door open' and tyre pressure warning lights.
One particular Renault innovation is new Renault Megane's cruise control/speed limiter which comes with a new interface. When this function is activated, the speed selected by the driver is displayed at the top of the speedometer which is itself ringed by a sequence of lights that take the form of an arc around the central display. In speed limiter mode, the red segment lights up as the speed increases, while the selected speed begins to flash if exceeded. The use of colours is not only intuitive and functional; it also represents a gain in terms of response time and safety.
The design of the seats and the materials chosen for them enable long distances to be covered in total comfort. In addition to the height- and reach-adjustable steering wheel, the intuitive seatadjustment controls fall easily to hand and it takes no time at all for drivers to modify the seatback angle and headrest, adjust the lumbar support and even raise or lower the seat height through 70mm of travel.
The sensation of travelling comfort is heightened by the carefully engineered acoustic comfort of the exceptionally roomy cabin which boasts best-in-class front elbow room. The boot volume of 405dm3 figures amongst the best in the segment. Access is made simple through the low sill height and wide hatch aperture which has been achieved by locating part of each rear light cluster on the hatch itself. The 60/40-split rear seat allows the load capacity to be easily adapted by means of practical, easy-to-reach levers. New Renault Megane also carries over the particularly useful under-floor stowage solutions featured on previous generation Renault Megane.
Exemplary handling: reassuring, responsive and precise
The response, dynamic performance and driving pleasure delivered by new Renault Megane live up every bit to the promise suggested by its looks.
Significant engineering effort went into all the elements that make up the chassis at a very early stage in the project. The MacPherson-type front suspension is coupled with a new horned subframe, a configuration which minimizes lateral displacement of the subframe to provide impeccable directional precision. At the same time, new Renault Megane's new power steering system offers even swifter response to driver input and helps counter the phenomenon of steering wheel inertia. The rear suspension is based on a programmed flexible beam using a closed section beam that combines stiffer torsional performance and light weight. The sum of these features has produced a more responsive, agile ride, as well as improved cornering without detracting from comfort.
In addition to the dynamic qualities of its chassis, new Renault Megane can claim class-leading stopping power thanks to its generously dimensioned brakes. The combination of vented 296mm-diameter discs at the front and 260mm-diameter rear discs slows new Renault Megane to a standstill after repeated braking from 100kph in just 37 metres, one of the segment's best braking distances.
New Renault Megane also ensures precise, responsive and reassuring roadholding, while its positive, predictable handling performance is suited to dynamic driving styles.
Respect for the environment and performance: the hallmarks of the dCi and TCe engine ranges
A significantly renewed range of dCi and TCe (Turbo Control efficiency) powerplants that combine fuel efficiency and driving pleasure will be available for new Renault Megane from launch. These engines are capable of delivering torque and power from low revs across a broad rev band whatever the demands made on them. New Renault Megane has profited from this expertise to feature a comprehensive line-up of engines and transmissions whose technical characteristics bring out the best in the new car's dynamic potential.
The dCi range
The dCi 85 and dCi 105 engines, which have been widely praised for the performance and driving pleasure they deliver, have been joined by the dCi 90 and the particulate filter-equipped dCi 110. Every one of these engines emits less than 120g of CO2/km, while the new dCi 130 profits from the dCi range's most advanced technology in terms of combustion and turbocharging to return CO2 emissions of just 135g/km. Peak power (130hp/96kW) arrives sooner too (at 3,750rpm instead of 4,000rpm), and maximum torque (300Nm) is available from 1,750rpm instead of 2,000rpm. The engine line-up will shortly be extended to include the dCi 160 coupled with a manual gearbox and the dCi 150 mated to automatic transmission.
The petrol range
Depending on market, the petrol range will comprise the 1.6 16V 100hp and 110hp engines, as well as the 2.0 16V 140hp and the TCe 180. The 2.0 16V will be available from launch with a six-speed manual gearbox, while continuously variable transmission will be introduced with this powerplant at a later date. Renault's latest petrol engine, the TCe 130 will be added to the catalogue in the spring of 2009. Developed within the framework of the Renault-Nissan Alliance, the latter is a perfect illustration of the expertise that has been acquired in the realm of downsizing. This new, fuel-efficient 1,397cc block packs the power of a 1.8-litre engine (130hp) and the torque of a 2.0 (190Nm), yet its CO2 emissions are less than those of a 1.6, making it particularly respectful of the environmental. Depending on version, these engines can be mated to five- or six-speed manual or automatic transmissions.
The new Renault Megane range will include biofuel-compatible engines (bioethanol and biodiesel).
Despite being bigger and roomier, new Renault Megane is an average 8kg lighter than its predecessor. The combination of lower weight and optimized aerodynamics has led to exceptionally low fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, but not to the detriment of either driving pleasure or performance.
New Renault Megane targets safety excellence
Like its predecessor, new Renault Megane has been designed to deliver best-in-class performance. Renault has naturally profited from its own engineering expertise and from the latest research carried out by LAB1 to develop a full range of safety equipment designed to perform in reallife driving situations. New Renault Megane benefits from Renault's extensive expertise in the realm of safety and has been developed to be exemplary in this field.
In terms of active safety, new Renault Megane, like the rest of the Renault range, features a long list of equipment aimed at helping drivers anticipate risk situations. This equipment includes visual seatbelt reminder warnings for all five seats, a tyre pressure monitoring system and bi- Xenon headlamps incorporating dipped beam cornering lights, as well as automatic activation of the headlamps, windscreen wipers and cruise control/speed limiter.
To optimize the driver's response to difficult or emergency situations, new Renault Megane is also equipped with ABS, EBD and Emergency Brake Assist as standard. Depending on version, ESC (Electronic Stability Control) and CSV understeer control are also available.
On the passive safety front, the programmed deformation of new Renault Megane's structure has been engineered to absorb impact energy with a view to protecting the cabin and therefore occupants. The materials employed – including high, very high and very, very high elastic limit steels – have been selected to absorb and dissipate as much kinetic energy as possible. Controlled deformation ensures that occupants are subjected to lower deceleration forces and this, coupled with the third-generation Renault System for Restraint and Protection (SRP3), guarantees an extremely high level of protection.
The Renault System for Restraint and Protection is unique on the market and takes into account both impact force and the build of occupants. It comprises double pretensioners (which limit forward movement of the body under impact by holding the straps firmly across the thorax and lap), a load limiter (which reduces the pressure applied by the belt on the thorax) and dual-chamber adaptive airbags (which deploy just the right amount of pressure to round off the dampening of the impact). The system also offers optimum protection against submarining, a phenomenon which involves the groin sliding underneath the seatbelt's lap strap and which can lead to serious abdominal lesions in a collision. The fastening of seatbelts is facilitated by the higher position of the stalks which offers easier access.
Impact from the side is a leading cause of fatal injuries since the flanks of a car traditionally offer less protection. However, specific work into this area has produced positive breakthroughs. Indeed, new Renault Megane inherits the same double side impact sensors and dual-chamber thorax/groin airbag first seen on Laguna III. The latter adapts the load exerted on the body by delivering three times more pressure to the groin area which is more exposed compared with the thorax.
Meanwhile, the fixation rods of the new generation headrests slide within the headrest and no longer within the upper part of the seatback and ensure enhanced protection of the cervical vertebrae in case of impact from the rear. Since the rods no longer form a rigid element in the seatback, the occupant's back can sink into the seatback until their head comes into contact with the headrest, resulting in less movement of the head and thorax.
Renault Safrane 2009

As part of its international development, Renault launches a new executive called Renault Safrane, this new model is based directly on Renault Samsung Motors' SM5 sedan. It provides a practical response to the needs of customers in the Gulf States looking for a prestigious and elegant three-volume sedan. Renault Safrane strengthens Renault's vehicle line-up in the Gulf States, topping the range alongside Renault Mégane hatchback, Mégane sedan, Mégane Coupé-Cabriolet and Renault Clio RS. Equipped with a V6 engine and automatic gearbox, Renault Safrane is manufactured in RSM Busan plant in South Korea, an 80.1% owned subsidiary of the Renault group.
Renault Twingo RS 2009

Renault Twingo RS is a high-performance, affordable entry point into the Renault Sport range. It was unveiled in Boulogne-Billancourt, near Paris, France, on January 31 by the drivers of the ING Renault F1 Team. Compact proportions and sharp styling echo the Renault Twingo Concept show car which was a star of the 2006 Paris Motor Show. The Renault Twingo's distinctive looks have been made more athletic thanks to wider front and rear wings, sculpted side skirts and an aerodynamic spoiler which all point to the car's sporting character. Inside, the cabin has been tailored for focused sports driving, with a number of specific details unique to this model: Renault Sport seats featuring enhanced lateral support, aluminium pedals, a leather steering wheel and a specific rev counter.
The balanced, sporty handling of Renault Twingo RS combines driving enjoyment, sports performance and impeccable safety. The two Renault Sport chassis on offer (sport and Cup) both feature wider front and rear track. The standard ESP can be manually deactivated, ensuring the car is easy to use on a day-to-day basis while maintaining its sporty credentials.
Renault Twingo RS is powered by a normally aspirated 1.6 litre 16V engine developed by Renault Sport Technologies. The engine pumps out 133hp (98kW) at 6,750rpm with 160Nm of torque at 4,400rpm. The unit's punchy character is reinforced by the aggressive engine note, which has been the focus of specific development. The four-into-one exhaust is a technological marvel, striking a perfect balance between acoustics, performance and emissions.
Sporting looks designed for performance
To round off the Renault Sport range alongside Renault Clio and Mégane Renault Sport, Renault has designed an affordable, high-performance hot hatch with bags of character. Renault Twingo RS's compact proportions and sharp styling embody its fun-to-drive, sporty nature, and are reminiscent of the Twingo Concept show car. Additional cooling for the 133hp normally-aspirated 1.6 litre 16V engine is provided by a wide Renault Sport air-intake grille in the front bumper. The sculpted side sills, coupled with wider front and rear wings, underline Renault Twingo RS's assertive character. At the rear, the chromed exhaust tail pipe emerges through a two-tone bumper. The foglamp surrounds, wing mirror shrouds, 17-inch alloy wheels and aerodynamic spoiler all sport the same shade of dark metal grey. On request, Renault Sport decals can be added to the flanks or rear bumper. Inspired by the chequered flag, these designs conjure up the dynamic world of motor sport.
Renault Twingo RS is fitted with generously-proportioned tyres (195/45 R16 or 195/40 R17) mounted on aluminium alloy wheels. They house substantial brake discs and callipers which provide powerful, durable braking performance. Renault Twingo RS also introduces a new colour to the Renault Sport range, with the new Altica Grey once again echoing Twingo Concept. Three other metallic shades are available (Pearlescent Black; Extrême Blue and Platine Grey) in addition to Vif Red.
Sports styling inside
The ergonomic driving position conjures the world of racing with features that are centred firmly on the driver: aluminium pedals, and a four-spoke perforated leather steering wheel with dark charcoal stitching and a stitched red marker at the straight ahead point. Not only does this design offer increased comfort, it allows the driver a perfect grip in the 'ten-to-two' position. The rev-counter is located directly behind the steeringwheel, echoing racing car design. Employing a specific typeface, the numbers grow in size as the needle approaches the red line at 7,000rpm. Just like in the cockpit of the ING Renault F1 Team's R28 Formula 1 car, the rev-counter features a gear change alert to warn the driver as the engine approaches maximum revs.
The dark charcoal interior trim neatly expresses sporting performance. Offering additional lateral support and with excellent levels of comfort, the specific Renault Sport seats allow the driver to feel at one with the car. The colour of the Blood Orange safety belts matches the contrasting stitching on the upholstery. As with all cars developed by Renault Sport Technologies, the Renault Sport logo can be found inside the cabin, on the rev-counter, the door sills and the front seats. Outside, the badge features on the rear hatch and engine air filter.
Combining sports performance with everyday use
With Renault Twingo RS, the experts at Renault Sport Technologies have conquered two challenges with one car: combining true sports performance with day-to-day driveability. This little high-performance car offers genuine driving enjoyment in total safety. The responsive, balanced chassis uses the excellent Twingo platform, and has been tuned to offer precise, consistent sports handling. ESP is fitted as standard to allow the driver to retain control in slippery conditions. However, the system can be manually deactivated and, combined with the absence of emergency braking assist, this reinforces the car's sporty character. The assistance of the electric power steering has been tuned to offer sharp, precise response to the driver's instructions at the wheel. Renault Twingo RS guarantees powerful, durable braking thanks to ventilated discs and bearings inherited from Renault Mégane II, while the callipers are inherited from the new Renault Laguna.
A composed, balanced platform
Just like all other models in the Renault Sport range, the newcomer offers two chassis options: sports and Cup. On both, track has been widened by 60 mm at the front and 59 mm at the rear compared to Twingo GT. These modifications improve stability and lateral grip.
The front suspension is a pseudo-MacPherson type arrangement, with aluminium lower arms. The adoption of pushrods on the dampers improves the performance of the anti-roll bar for even better body control.
Renault Twingo RS's suspension is based on an H-type programmed deflection rear beam. To improve ride and comfort, the dampers are mounted vertically and coupled with variable rate coil springs. The 24mm diameter rear anti-roll bar (compared to 22.5mm on Twingo GT) brings a stiffness gain of 25%. The anti-roll performance has been calibrated to improve rear-end agility.
The set-up of the sport chassis was honed for the best and safest balance between driving enjoyment and performance. Compared to Renault Twingo GT, the chassis features a lower centre of gravity, thanks to a 10mm lower ride height. Stiffer springs (+30% compared to Twingo GT) and uprated dampers (also +30%) add to the car's sporty handling, while firmer bushing has enhanced suspension performance front and rear. The Renault Twingo RS sport chassis is also fitted with generously-proportioned tyres (195/45 R16).
A performance-focused Cup chassis
Renault Twingo RS is also available with a Cup chassis for incisive handling and maximum driving enjoyment. In this configuration, Renault Twingo RS offers handling to satisfy the demands of any enthusiast. This chassis offers optimum body control and its natural home is on the track, where flat cornering and improved corner speed demonstrate its effectiveness.
The Cup chassis rides another 4mm lower than the sport version, and its lower centre of gravity improves in-corner performance thanks to reduced weight transfer. Tuned damper settings and higher spring rates (10% stiffer front and rear) bring greater performance through better body control.
Outside, the Twingo Renault Sport Cup chassis stands out by its Dark Metal Grey 17-inch aluminium alloy wheels.
A punchy, flexible engine
Renault Twingo RS is powered by a normally-aspirated 1.6-litre 16V engine (K4M RS) which delivers 133hp (98kW) at 6,750rpm and 160Nm of torque at 4,400rpm. The free-revving engine offers flexible performance and instantaneous throttle response. At low revs and in the mid-range below 4,500 rpm, Renault Twingo RS offers lively, easy performance for everyday use. Beyond 4,500rpm, Renault Twingo RS gives full vent to its sporting character with true punchy performance.
The 133hp 1.6 litre 16V engine has been developed from the 1,598cc petrol engine. The improved power and torque are the result of a number of modifications and improvements to the mechanical components:
* The air filling rate has been improved thanks to a specific throttle valve unit and aluminium plenum chamber, plus revised diameters and lengths for the air-inlets.
* To improve air intake and facilitate gas flow, research was carried out on the aerodynamics of the valve seats. The calibration of the camshafts was revised to a longer opening of the valves and higher lift (11mm compared to an average of 9mm).
* The design of the combustion chamber and piston enables a high compression ratio of 11.0:1, leading to enhanced combustion and efficiency and reduced harmful emissions.
* The continuously-variable inlet camshaft improves performance right across the rev range. The actuator varies the timing setting to optimise valve opening and closing.
Sports performance and acoustic enjoyment
The experts at Renault Sport Technologies have worked hard to give the Renault Twingo RS an engine note in keeping with its sporting character. The engine noise is minimal at low revs, but builds mid-way through the rev range to become 'fiery' when pushed to its limits.
The four-into-one exhaust manifold, made from thin-walled steel, forms the object of a patent by Renault Sport Technologies. The technological marvel is to have combined four long steel tubes in such a restricted space. This architecture offers an excellent trade-off between acoustics, performance and emissions. Indeed, the engine has been designed to be able to comply with Euro5 legislation.
Renault Twingo RS is fitted with a revised version of the five-speed manual gearbox (JR5). The closely-spaced ratios are linked to a fast and precise shift mechanism to favour crisp acceleration in all gears.
The Renault Sport Technologies entry-level model
Renault Twingo RS is the latest model in the Renault Sport Technologies range, and will reach market late in the third quarter of 2008 in Western Europe. This latest example of Renault's hot hatch prowess rounds off the Renault Sport family alongside Clio and Mégane Renault Sport.
With nearly 13,000 registrations in 40 countries in 2007, the Renault Sport range registered an increase in volume of more than 50% compared to 2006. The arrival of the new Renault Twingo RS will help the Group expand its presence even further in the hot hatch market. Great Britain is the number one market for Renault Sport vehicles, and should account for a third of sales. Renault has chosen the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show to unveil Renault Laguna Coupe Concept, its vision of a top-of-the-range grand tourer Coupé - the Renault Laguna Coupe (2009). Intended for the discerning motorist, who understands performance, driving pleasure, and refinement, Renault Laguna Coupe Concept successfully marries high-tech with high cool. Underpinned by the Four-wheel Active Drive chassis, its boasts a brand new V6 dCi powertrain developed as part of the Renault-Nissan Alliance.
Built on the same platform as New Laguna, Renault Laguna Coupe Concept is a powerful, elegant affirmation of the long tradition of classic coupés. Rooted in its grand touring heritage, Renault Laguna Coupe Concept embodies Renault's vision of the sports Coupé.
The look and lines of Renault Laguna Coupe Concept share a common bond with the Renault Fluence Concept (2004). It measures 4.685m in length and is distinguished by its flowing, thoroughbred profile, emphasized by a long nose and very short rear overhang. Its aerodynamic crease lines rise from below the grille then powerfully up on to the car's flanks, elegantly underlining the wings. The lines sweep on to the rear of the car, where they come together over the boot, underscoring the muscularity of car's shoulders. The glazed area is highlighted by the pure arc of its rim.
The low, wide, robust aluminium grille is visually original and hints at a powerful engine behind it. This sense of power is further reinforced by the long, centrally-ribbed bonnet that springs straight from the world of Coupé grand tourers. Its front end houses two headlamp units that give it a haughty look as they stretch back along the front fenders.
Premiered on the Renault Nepta Concept in 2006, the LED headlamps use a technology based on the reflection and propagation of light. The light beams from the main headlamps are reflected by crystal-shaped transparent blocks. The intensity and distribution of the light automatically adapts to the driving conditions. The two LED foglamps blend perfectly with this powerfully modelled front end.
Two narrow, elongated lights, together with the converging crease lines, lend the rear a uniquely stylish, luminous look, which gives Renault Laguna Coupe Concept an aura of refinement and power. Encased in the bodywork, the rear lamps are proudly displayed like gems of technology. They are further emphasised by the flowing crease lines which run above and parallel to them before converging towards the full-length glass roof which tapers down towards a central tail panel. Through the roof's glazed area the third stop light can be seen. It gives off a soft-focus glow and, like a sort of fountain of light, it faintly mirrors the distinctive pattern of the rear lights. To round off the overall impression of sobriety and elegance, the lower rear end houses an air vent that incorporates two profiled exhausts.
The two frameless doors boast their own lights and open on to a totally original cabin. The scissor doors have dedicated Stabilus hydraulic door stays, which hold doors open at any angle. The door sills are ideally placed to help occupants ease themselves in and out of their seats. They bear the etched acronym '4RD' (French for four wheel steering), which denotes the Active Drive chassis.
Renault Laguna Coupe Concept's cabin is exactly how the cabin of a high-end Coupé should be. The dash draws on the principal stylistic features of new Renault Laguna, albeit in a more exclusive manner. With its soft, pure lines, it appears weightless and airy. The waveshape of the central strip is the guiding theme, while two side vents close off a long airconditioning strip that runs the entire width of the windscreen.
The interior exudes contentment and well-being. A large, originally-shaped screen in the centre of the dashboard stretches out towards the lateral vents, which are styled to resemble jet plane nozzles. Apart from journey information displays (navigation, radio, music players, video, and Bluetooth® phone kit), the screen also displays ambient images inspired by the science of light therapy. The air-conditioning controls are located in the centre of the dashboard, in an easily identifiable dedicated section framed by vents. Designed for intuitive ease of use and reach, they are like crystal gems set in a chrome display case.
In a nod to the design codes of high-end sports Coupés, the spokes of the steering wheel are deployed like the petals of a flower, guiding the driver's gaze to the binnacles on the dashboard. The ethereal steering column runs into a heavy aluminium shell that houses controls which resemble high-precision micrometers.
Instrumentation is made up of two analogue and digital binnacles in the driver's line of sight, the fruit of high-precision technology and mechanics comparable to that used in quality clockmaking. The originally shaped binnacles are capped by a porous cowling that lets the light pass and contributes to the way in which the binnacles play with depth and texture. With their mat-finish aluminium surrounds, they have been designed like headlamps.
The cabin's fit and finish plays on contrast. The roof, dashboard, central tunnel, and the lower section of the door panels are covered with grey faux leather, whereas the seats and other elements (door pillars, instrument cluster cowling, top of the central armrest) are covered in leather with copper and metal highlights and copper-coloured stitching. Renault Laguna Coupe Concept's floor is covered with a contemporary, protective, metal mesh.
Driver and passenger can nestle comfortably into the roomy asymmetrical front seats, whose airy architecture provides firm, balanced support. They seats are at one with the chassis and wrap snugly around their occupants. Their backrests, whose colour echoes the Aluminium White of the car's bodywork, swivel to afford easy access to the back seats, with the front seat cushion sliding automatically forward. The two rear seats are also asymmetrical and separate, but the hugging sweep of the car's waist-belt gathers them into its U-shape, creating a sense of security. Between the two seats there is a ski flap, on which sits a first aid box. Both rear passengers can sit back and watch what's showing on the Samsung multimedia players housed in the back of the front seats. The long central tunnel, which houses the slim-style gear lever, the Start/Stop button, and the backlit navigation controls, acts as a link joining front and rear.
The Bose® sound system was tailor-made for Renault Laguna Coupe Concept. The ten speakers treat the four occupants to sound whose standards of quality and power are akin to the acoustic clarity of a concert hall: the perfect accompaniment to the sheer energy of Renault Laguna Coupe Concept.
A Coupé of this class just had to have a powerful, responsive engine to match its elegance and passionate feel. Renault has therefore chosen Renault Laguna Coupe Concept to premiere its brand-new V6 dCi.
The result of close collaboration with Nissan as part of the Alliance, this new 2,993cc V6 dCi block will come as standard. It delivers a peak output of 170-195kW (230-265hp) and a maximum torque of 450-550Nm, depending on the version. Good for 0-100kph in only seven seconds, the engine is outstandingly supple, rounded, and balanced. It responds immediately to the open throttle with power and stretch. It drives through a 6-speed automatic transmission, offering outstanding driving pleasure, well-controlled fuelconsumption, and CO2 emissions lower than 200g/km.
Developed from the same platform as New Laguna, Renault Laguna Coupe Concept is the first car to feature the new four-wheel Active Drive chassis. This high-tech underpinning, developed by expert engineers at Renault Sport Technologies, guarantees the ultimate in sheer sporting sensation and dynamic driving pleasure. It allies agility with stability to set new standards in safe handling. At low speeds the chassis offers greater manoeuvrability, while its road-holding is so true that it cleaves to the road as surely as a train on rails. And so driveable is Renault Laguna Coupe Concept that there is no denying the sheer pleasure of being at the wheel. The car guarantees high-quality ride comfort and peace of mind for occupants, who can feel the benefits of unparalleled standards of active safety.
Renault Laguna Coupe Concept's 20-inch aluminium wheels lend it poise and emphasize its image of dynamic performance and power. Their helix design cleverly hides the nuts and bolts from sight, while also efficiently ensuring that the brake callipers cool. The generously sized 245/35 Michelin Pilot Sport tyres allow the car to handle like a sports car, but in absolute safety, for even more driving pleasure.
Renault Laguna Coupe Concept makes a statement about its owner's life-style and personality. A car for the car-lover, it appeals to 40-somethings who are passionate about automobiles and motor sport - connoisseurs who are demanding, ambitious, and driven by a desire for professional success. Prone to falling in love with a car at first sight, they are quite capable of changing brand, and will appreciate the style, the technology, and the design and production qualities of Renault Laguna Coupe Concept.
